Postpartum Depression & Anxiety

With the enormity of becoming a mother, it’s natural to feel a range of emotions and feel them deeply!  A woman’s emotional health is most at risk during pregnancy or following the birth of a baby than any other time in her life.  In fact, 1 in 5 mothers experience Postpartum Depression making it the most common complication of childbirth.  Fathers (www.postpartummen.com) and adoptive parents can experience it, too.

Do you…

  • Have trouble sleeping?

  • Find you're exhausted most of the time?

  • Notice a decrease in your appetite?

  • Worry about little things that never used to bother you?

  • Wonder if you'll ever have time to yourself again?

  • Feel guilty, ashamed, and think you are not a good mother

  • Think your children would be better off without you?

  • Worry that your husband or partner will get tired of you feeling this way?

  • Quick to anger and seem to snap at others over everything?

  • Think everyone else is a better mother than you are?

  • Cry over the slightest thing?

  • No longer enjoy the things you used to enjoy?

  • Isolate yourself from your friends and neighbours?

  • Fear leaving the house or being alone?

  • Have anxiety attacks?

  • Have unexplained anger?

  • Have difficulty concentrating?

  • have repeated, unwanted “scary thoughts” about your baby’s well being that seem to come out of nowhere?

  • Think something else is wrong with you or your marriage?

  • Feel like you will always feel this way and never get better?

Do you feel this way much of the time? For longer than two weeks?  You could be experiencing Postpartum Depression.

We know that feeling vulnerable can make it difficult to ask for help. But we also know that reaching out for support can be very empowering by providing you and your family with information, understanding, and the tools you need to feel better. Psychotherapy for postpartum depression is a well-established, evidenced-based treatment for postpartum depression.  Postpartum Depression is very treatable. Do not let misinformation, uncertainty, shame, finances, embarrassment, or denial get in the way of you getting the help you need. Once you decide to seek treatment, you will be on the road to feeling better...

Counselling FAQs

How long do I have to wait for an initial appointment? Generally speaking, appointments can be scheduled within a week of your initial call.  Urgent appointments (same day or next day) may be available if needed.  Daytime, evening, and weekend appointments are available.

Are my counselling sessions confidential? Yes.  Your confidentiality is of paramount importance. As a registered member of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers, I am required and deeply committed to practicing under the professional ethics and standards that apply to the practice of Social Work.  Which means you will receive highly professional services.

What can I expect for the initial session? In the initial session, the therapist will work with you to gain a full understanding of what you are experiencing and what you need to feel better.  Together you will formulate a plan specific to your needs, what you would like to see change, and what resources are available to you. You may feel hopeful and a sense of relief because you have taken the first step in feeling better. Individuals and couples often report experiencing new awareness and insights from this initial session.

How often will I need to attend counselling sessions? Together, you and therapist will determine the frequency of appointments based on your needs and schedule, which may be weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. According to research, individuals and couples that have the most positive outcomes from counselling attended on a regular basis.

How long will I need to be in counselling? Individuals and couples come to counselling for different reasons and at different points in their journey; therefore, the length of time individuals and couples engage in counselling really varies. The therapist’s first priority is making sure you get the results you want from your counselling experience; which for most, is to feel better as quickly as possible.

What is your rate? A sliding fee scale based on household income is available. Many extended health care insurance packages will cover counselling services.  I would suggest speaking with your Human Resource Department or your insurance company to determine if the services of a Registered Social Worker (RSW) are covered.  They often are.  Counselling fees are income tax deductible as a medical expense.  Also, they can be applied as a business expense for people who are self-employed.  Receipts that can be submitted for reimbursement are issued at the end of each session.

It is common for individuals to worry about the cost of counselling.  Consider the benefits of this short term investment. Taking care of yourself and getting what you need is important..the cost of not getting help is much higher. Your health and well being is worth the investment.

Can I bring my baby? My partner? A friend? Absolutely.  The office is a comfortable, baby-friendly space.

Does this mean I’m not a good mom or that I’m ‘crazy?’ No.  It means you are a good mom experiencing difficult circumstances.  Admitting that something is wrong, especially at a time when everything is suppose to be so ‘right’ and ‘perfect,’ can feel like taking a step off a cliff, not knowing how far you will fall. It can be scary.  We get it.  But you’re not alone. Counselling is your opportunity to courageously take control and feel better.

What if I make an appointment and need to cancel? Since the scheduling of a counselling appointment involves the reservation of a time specifically for you, a minimum of 24 hours notice is required for rescheduling or cancelling an appointment. Unless we reach a different agreement, the full fee will be charged for sessions missed without such notification.  Please review our Cancellation Policy for more details.

Jodi Tiller MSW, RSW - Founder of Rebirth Wellness Centre

Becoming a mother is a significant life transition. It is a woman’s rebirth and it changes everything.  In our culture, we do very little to prepare, support, celebrate or nurture new mothers. With the expectation and pressure ‘to do it all’ and do it with minimal support, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, alone, and not enough. Becoming a mother comes with deep vulnerability and a deep desire to get it ‘right.’ I’ve had the privilege of working with women hoping to become mothers, new mothers and mothers in different life stages for over 20 years. After several years of struggling with fertility, I became a mother to a beautiful son and found myself saying what I had heard thousands of mothers say in my counselling practice, ‘this isn’t what I expected.’ Becoming a mother fuelled my passion for helping mothers navigate the joys and realities of motherhood with confidence, joy, trust and unwavering self love.

Danielle Revington, RSW

For the past 10 years I have provided counselling, treatment, and support to some of the strongest and most resilient people I have ever met. I’m still in awe of the vulnerability that people often bring to a counselling session. I truly admire the courage it takes to reach out and speak your truth. My passion is supporting women and mothers with their mental health and wellness.

I recognize the impact mental health can have in our lives; including the ability to mother, and to mother in a way that feeds our soul. I have personally experienced the heartache and strain that mental health can have on our ability to cope, function, and thrive in life. As a mother, I have learnt that if we prioritize our own mental health and wellness, it can positively impact our parenting and overall sense of self. They say it take’s a village to raise a child, but I believe it takes just as much love, compassion, patience, and encouragement to raise a mother. We all have our own limitations and personal struggles. I believe that this is where a supportive community can be born and this new identity as a mother can flourish. I look forward to seeing this unfold in the Mothering Your Mind group and in our 1-1 sessions.

For the past decade I have supported women and their children to manage and overcome depressive symptoms, anxiety, addiction, eating disorders, and a variety of other life challenges. I have a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours), a Trauma Treatment Certificate, and I’m a Registered Social Worker. I come to the table with a kind heart, a very compassionate and focused mind, but I also bring a sense of honesty and trust into everything I do. My counselling style incorporates Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Solution Focused treatments. I have offered 1-1 counselling sessions over the years, as well as facilitated over ten different types of treatment groups to men, women, and their families. I believe in the power of mindfulness, grounding, and yoga, as tools for good mental health and wellness. I’m currently studying to become a certified yoga instructor. However, what I am most proud of above all else, are the two little girls and one sweet boy who call me Mom. This journey has not been an easy one, but they say the most meaningful things in life are not. I am beaming with a rich light of energy, excitement, and love, with simply knowing that I will have the privilege to walk alongside you on your journey as a Mom.

Since becoming a mother five years ago I have learned so much about the importance of having consistent mental health support in place through pregnancy and the transition into parenthood. I strongly believe that every person making the step into parenthood deserves a safe space and warm connection to a counsellor who can listen to their worries, challenges and joys of having a new child. Some of my main areas of skill include coping with a difficult pregnancy, birth trauma, relationship challenges in the postpartum period and family adjustments. I also am very interested in spirituality and how this affects parenting choices, as well as learning new ways to parent that are true to you and what your beliefs are. In our sessions you can expect a warm, compassionate and gentle approach in our work together. I like to focus on connecting the mind and body together by checking in about where you may be storing stress in your body. My approach to counselling is strengths-based, motivational and collaborative. Within your comfort level I offer moments to connect with your inner child and learning how to parent from a grounded place by using psychosomatic techniques in each session. I would be honoured to work with you in your journey to finding home within yourself.

Sarah King, MSW, RSW

I have always had a strong passion for helping individuals, couples and families cope and adjust to life’s major moments and transitions, and the stressors that come along with them. Having primarily worked in the hospital setting, I have been exposed to all aspects of care, from the emergency department through to acute care and all the way to rehabilitation and outpatient care. More recently, I have spent time working directly with mothers, partners and babies as they navigated through their experiences in the hospital within birthing and postpartum units, as well as within the NICU and paediatric inpatient units.

I have counselled individuals through the highs and lows of pregnancy and postpartum. I’ve worked alongside families in some of their most vulnerable times as they have experienced loss, and have counselled individuals through traumatic birth experiences. I have also worked with intended parents of surrogacy. My peers describe me as a hard working, dedicated, warm and compassionate clinician which is what I aim to bring to each of our sessions. I believe in the power of connection and building relationships. I consider myself to be strengths based, trauma informed, and solution focused. I utilize Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) often. I have completed Level 1 and 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. I am the proud momma of a beautiful one year old baby girl. With her birth a little over a year ago, I gained invaluable life experience and know first hand what it is like to navigate changes to self identity and relationships in pregnancy and postpartum. There can be so many difficult yet incredible moments often happening all at the same time. It would be my privilege to explore and process your own unique journey together with you.

Heather MacNally, MSW, RSW - Individual and Couples

Since becoming a social worker I have been passionate about about working with women. I began my career working with, and advocating for abused women. I then transitioned into healthcare, where I worked in Women’s Health and then both paediatric and adult emergency departments within the hospital setting. My journey with women and their families has provided me the honour of walking with them and holding space for them during their losses and joys. My practice is guided by trauma informed care, unconditional positive regard, empowerment and collaboration. It is my passion to help my clients find healthy perceptions of themselves and strengthen their relationships so they can know themselves as peaceful, complete, whole and safe. I am also excited to be working with couples as I believe that our personal relationships are offer our greatest opportunities for growth and healing.
